Pickering: -
The Pickering Panthers Minor Midget AA team ended their 2011-12 season on a high note by capturing the March Meltdown Tournament in Etobicoke by defeating Stoney Creek Warriors 2-0 in the tournament final. Both OMHA teams had entered the final with 4 win, 1 loss records and were primed for an epic battle.
Pickering advanced to the final by downing Humberview Huskies 2-1 in overtime in the semi-final while Stoney Creek defeated Toronto Colts 4-2. Both squads had won their respective groups with 3-1 records and both had led the goal scoring and goals against marks in the tournament thus setting up the clash of OMHA teams.
The game itself was an absolute classic as both the Panthers and the Warriors use skill and speed to their advantage. Despite the fact that both teams led the tournament groupings in scoring, this game was scoreless until 3:21 of the 3rd period when Panther captain Jake Gilmour pushed the puck over the goalline following a goal mouth scramble. Pulling out all stops, the Warriors were unable to get the puck passed Game MVP Jon Kope who recorded the shutout. Panther Paddy Teggart potted the empty net goal at :42 second mark to seal the deal.
