Drill of the Week: Playing the Puck presented by CoachThem

A goalie's ability to step out of their crease and support their teammates during puck retrievals will not only make their defenders lives easier but also allow your team to transition out of the defensive zone quickly. In this drill your goalie will retrieve pucks below the goal line and deliver outlet passes to players along the wall.

Description

  • Coach with pucks on the red or blue line rims the puck.
  • Goalie stops the rim, turns and gives outlet pass to F1. Repeat rim.
  • Goalies gives outlet pass to F2. Repeat the rim.
  • Goalie gives stretch pass to F3.
  • Do 3-5 reps for each pass. Alternate sides.

Key Points

  • Stopping the rim and turning and looking up ice.
  • Hard, flat tape to tape passes.
  • Checking shoulders before going behind the net.
